Peacock spider females from the mallee!

Description

IMPORTANT: These juvie are very small (3mm) and will require fruitflies until they are big enough to eat pinheads.  Please do not purchase them unless you have access to fruit flies.

The female counterpart to the Copper peacock spiders, these adorable and very pretty peacock spiders hails from open, semi-arid Triodia (spinifex) grasslands in mallee habitat in SA. They are in season during the winter months, like most peacock spiders. They blend in very well with the red desert sand they live on and are nearly invisible until they jump or move around, dancing and displaying using their fluffy leg warmers on leg III to females.

They are a lovely copper colour with swirls, spots and a light beige patch on the abdomen. (See photos for variations)

Unusually for peacock spiders, the female is just as pretty as the male! The females of this species can vary in colour depending on habitat, some females that have ventured into neighbouring patches of full, clay-soil mallee with lots of leaf litter have become dark, however males always seem to be light coloured and found in Triodia grassland.

Care Tips:

  • This jumper will require red desert sand to thrive.  They make a little sand bubble out of their silk that they like to spend most of their time in, sleeping.
  • Tiny Pinheads no larger than the body size of the jumper is recommended for feeding. However as these are juvie you will need to feed them fruit flies until they are mature.

Enclosure should have more floor space than roof space (horizontal) as these jumpers prefer to stay on the sand, and will rarely if ever climb to the top of the enclosure.  We recommend something smaller like a mini clear view enclosure with jumper kit (we will replace the substrate with red desert sand)

Best jumper I’ve gotten so far! Came packaged nicely as always, the jumper also arrived in healthy condition upon opening package. At first I was worried about not seeing the jumper as it burrowed on the surface of the sand to make its silk bubble hide. I dropped a pinhead cricket in and left the spider to relax. The second day I noticed the jumper come out to appreciate some sun.. it has the same routine every morning and late afternoon of exploring and hunting around it’s enclosure. As well as being rather quite active it’s extremely beautiful and the patterns accompanied with the colours has me sitting there for minutes just watching. Always takes to food, no problems whatsoever. Just buy one when they’re stocked!!

Beautiful little spider with an amazing colour and pretty patterns! Surprisingly active, spends a lot more time out of its sand bubble during the day than my pale pebble mimicking jumper.
