Description

Pseudomantis albofimbriata is a relatively large and robust mantis found throughout eastern australia. Nymphs can be an array of colours, usually a base brown or green often with pink markings on the abdomen. Adults are green, or very rarely brown with a white edge to the wings.

Females can reach up to 70 mm and males around 50 mm. They are hardy ambush predators and make excellent pets for beginners.

While the name “false garden mantis” might imply that this is not a true mantis, along with the genus name (‘Psuedomantis’ = ‘almost mantis”), it actually refers to the genus Mantis, which includes the Australian Eight-spot mantis (Mantis octospilota) and the European mantis (Mantis religiosa), so therefore Psuedomantis is actually saying that it is almost like the genus Mantis, as these are true mantids.

Enclosure

  • Size: The enclosure should be at least 3 times the mantis’s length in height and 2 times in width to allow proper molting (mantises hang upside down to shed).
    • For nymphs (young): Small deli cups or jars (e.g., 32 oz) with ventilation.
    • For adults: Minimum 20-30 cm tall x 15 cm wide (larger is better).
    • Our mini mesh makes a good home
  • Type: Plastic deli cups, glass terrariums, or mesh/net cages work well. Ensure good ventilation to prevent mold but retain some moisture.
  • Substrate: Optional, preferably with minimal hiding spots for prey to hide under.
  • Decor: Provide plenty of branches, sticks, or artificial plants for climbing and perching. Mantises spend most time hanging.

Humidity and Water

  • Mist the enclosure lightly once every 1-2 days (more often in mesh cages, less in glass).
  • This provides drinking water (mantises drink droplets from leaves/decor) and maintains moderate humidity.
  • Allow the enclosure to dry out partially between mistings to avoid stagnation.
  • Use clean, dechlorinated water for misting.

Feeding

  • Diet: Live insects only. Appropriate-sized prey (no larger than the mantis’s abdomen).
    • Nymphs: Start with fruit flies (Drosophila), then pinhead crickets or small house flies.
    • Subadults/Adults: House flies, blue bottle flies, crickets, locusts, or moths.
  • Frequency:
    • Young nymphs: Feed every 1-2 days (offer multiple small prey).
    • Adults: Every 3-5 days (1-2 larger prey items).
  • Remove uneaten prey after 24 hours to prevent stress or injury.
  • Remember if the mantis is not eating its food, remove as it most likely pre-molt.  Wait 3 days and then try again.
