You will receive:

• 1 x Captive Bred Desert Bark Huntsman (Pediana horni)
• One mini mesh pop-up enclosure (18 x 15 cm)
• 5 x Small crickets for feeding

This huntsman spider is the most widespread Pediana species, being found throughout most of inland Australia, on the bark of trees and shrubs. They use their cryptic colouration to hide in plain sight. They can be distinguished from other Pediana species by the white spots on the inside of each leg.  They grow to about 5cm-7cm in legspan.

Enclosure Setup:

Include some bark leaned against the side of a mesh enclosure for climbing and hiding, as Pediana horni naturally resides on tree bark. Add twigs, or dried leaves to create hiding spots and mimic their natural surroundings. These items can be sourced from pet stores or your backyard (ensure they’re clean and free of pesticides)

Feeding:

Feed live insects such as crickets 2–3 times a week. Insects should be no larger than one-third the size of the spider to ensure safe consumption. Pediana horni is an active hunter, chasing down prey rather than using webs.

Drop one insect into the enclosure or use feeding tongs to place it inside. If the spider doesn’t eat within 6–8 hours, remove the insect and try again the next day, as this indicates the spider isn’t hungry.

Spray a bit of water once a week on the side of mesh.

Molting:

Pediana horni will molt as it grows, leaving behind its old exoskeleton, which may look like a second spider. Do not disturb the spider during molting, and avoid feeding it until the process is complete, as it’s vulnerable during this time.

Lifespan: A healthy Pediana horni can live up to 2 years or more with proper care.
