Description
These large, very robust stick insects are found in FNQ rainforests, they feed on Eucalyptus.
Females are about 17-19cm in length and have a robust, cylindrical body. Females also have small, fan-shaped wings they use to startle attackers with, if grabbed by the thorax the stick insect will open it’s mottled blue wings and flap them slowly, making a rasping noise. Males are about 14cm, very thin and have long wings rendering them capable of short, slow flights.
Crowned stick insects are named due to the hardened “crown” atop their heads.
