Description
Rusty wolf spiders are a medium-sized, undescribed species found in SA’s northern mallee. They can be found in burrows in sandy soils and may also be found abroad at night, sometimes metres away from their burrow. They are a hardy and easy to keep species in captivity and they change colour dramatically as they mature, from sling to sub-adult they are the pale orange colour as shown in the photograph, however upon maturing they become much darker with slightly different patterns. They are terrific feeders and if a prey item is held above them with tweezers they can even jump like crocodiles to capture it.
