Description
Sunburst wolf spiders are a species of wolf spider (Lycosidae) found in short burrows in SA’s northern stony desert regions. They display a vibrant reddish-yellow as the main colour, with many other colours and patterns mixed through, and steel blue legs. These spiders grow into adults that are smaller and less bulky than those of T. harmsi from semi-arid mallee habitat, maturing at around 65mm legspan and 25mm in body length.
Wolf spiders are great feeders and have a big appetite. One of our wolf spiders ate 7 crickets at once! Wolf spiders are very fast and skittish and unlikely to bite, however we do not recommend handling Lycosids as they stress easily and have a painful bite. When hungry, sunbursts will dart in and out of their burrow trying to catch the crickets walking past, it can be quite entertaining to watch them miss the crickets passing by their burrow.
