Description
Ranking among the world’s largest wolf spiders, reaching 100mm in legspan. These large spiders roam inland South Australia’s salt lakes and move with characteristic bent-forward legs, this posture makes them look a lot like ghost crabs, and they are a similar size. These spiders are extremely fast and hunt down other spiders, grasshoppers and scorpions on the lake surface at night. Males are significantly smaller than the females but still have extremely long legs for running. This species has huge black eyes, useful for seeing long distances the flat, barren salt lake surface. Adults are light grey to white in colour with very spiny pink-haired legs and dark markings on the abdomen,
Juveniles lack the spear-shaped markings on the abdomen and instead have a few large round black spots on the abdomen.
