Description

Tasmanicosa stella is a large, burrowing wolf spider found across a wide region of arid WA, SA and NSW.  Despite its large range this species is very uncommon. This species gets its name “stella” from the latin word for star, in reference to the unique pattern on the carapace. These spiders construct a conspicuous open burrow in sandy habitats, with an extremely heavy silk lining inside and a thick silken rim around the edge. When the spider is disturbed it can pull the burrow lining closed like a sock, quickly rendering the entrance invisible.
