Description
These beetles are a member of the Darkling beetle (Tenbrionidae) family which includes recognisable beetles like the mealworm beetle (Tenebrio monitor) and the Superworm (Zophobas morio).
These beetles have a blue, waxy coating that gives them a blue look that can’t be captured in photos. This species hails from open eucalyptus forests in SA. They cannot bite and are great to handle, they may play dead however. Eggs are laid in substrate and the larvae are similar to mealworms, however harder and longer. They tunnel through soil looking for organic matter to feed on before pupating and turning into a beetle.
They feed upon:
Darkling beetle food (Releasing 10th of April 2021)
Fresh fruits and vegetables (Pumpkin, Lettuce, carrot, apple, Sweet potato, leafy greens, grape, etc)
They benefit from a chunky, organic substrate which they can also add to their diet. (Coming 10th April 2021)
