What is it used for?

🦞 Shell & Exoskeleton Support for Arthropods (Isopods/Millipedes)
Terrestrial crustaceans like isopods need constant access to calcium carbonate to form their hard shells after moulting [1]. Because they are detritivores, they prefer chewing on solid chunks rather than consuming fine, loose dust, which can clog their breathing organs (spiracles).
  • Substrate Mixing: Mix a few tablespoons of pure calcium carbonate powder right into their soil bedding to buffer the pH and provide background minerals.
  • Solid Sources (Preferred): Keep a permanent piece of cuttlebone or crushed oyster shells in a dry corner of the enclosure. The arthropods will actively gather around it and rasp or chew on it as needed.
🦎 Dusting Crickets for Reptiles
Feeder insects naturally contain very high phosphorus and low calcium. Coating them in calcium carbonate balances the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio to prevent Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD).
  • The “Shake and Bake” Method: Place your crickets in a small plastic bag, deep cup, or container. Add a small pinch (about 1/4 teaspoon) of ultra-fine calcium carbonate powder. Gently swirl or shake the container until the crickets are lightly covered in white.
