Terrestrial crustaceans like isopods need constant access to calcium carbonate to form their hard shells after moulting [1]. Because they are detritivores, they prefer chewing on solid chunks rather than consuming fine, loose dust, which can clog their breathing organs (spiracles).
- Substrate Mixing: Mix a few tablespoons of pure calcium carbonate powder right into their soil bedding to buffer the pH and provide background minerals.
- Solid Sources (Preferred): Keep a permanent piece of cuttlebone or crushed oyster shells in a dry corner of the enclosure. The arthropods will actively gather around it and rasp or chew on it as needed.

Feeder insects naturally contain very high phosphorus and low calcium. Coating them in calcium carbonate balances the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio to prevent Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD).
- The “Shake and Bake” Method: Place your crickets in a small plastic bag, deep cup, or container. Add a small pinch (about 1/4 teaspoon) of ultra-fine calcium carbonate powder. Gently swirl or shake the container until the crickets are lightly covered in white.
