Description
The world’s largest cockroach is native to coastal central and northern Queensland in dry eucalyptus forest. Adults construct burrows and emerge at night to drag dry eucalyptus litter into the burrows to feed on. Adult females will raise the babies in the burrow for several months, caring for them and bringing them fallen leaves to eat from outside the burrow. Males wander at night in search of females and have a prominent bump in the pronotum.
These cockroaches are long-lived and slow growing, nymphs can take up to 3 years to mature and adults can live past 10 years.
This species is calm, and cannot climb or fly.
Care is simple, provide deep sandy substrate and dried eucalyptus leaves on the surface for food. They do not bite when handed but care must be taken as they are heavy and if dropped could be hurt. If handling, do so close to the ground.
