Description
Clown bugs are true bugs (order Hemiptera) which are characterised by long, straw-like sucking mouth parts, these are formed by the mandibles and maxillae, which is sheathed by a modified labium.
These bugs feed on the sap of eucalyptus stems and leaves and in very large numbers, can damage trees.
Leaves will need to be changed twice a week, Eucalyptus camuldulensis (river red gum) works best.
Nymphs are very colourful and can vary quite a bit in colour. Adults are generally less colourful but you can get green and pink adults. Adults can fly and will flutter short distances if disturbed.
Adults are about 25mm long. These bugs grow quite fast, moulting every week or so.
